“Energy Efficiency – Challenges and Opportunities”

At the next AIA Atlanta Principals Roundtable on Wednesday, February 8th, come hear Dennis Creech, Executive Director of the Southface Energy Institute, and Brandon Jones, manager of Southface’s Commercial Green Building Services, give an update on energy policy and economic development. They will touch on the link between energy, water and economic development [seldom discussed by the media], building energy codes for the Southeast, and several new energy/green building program opportunities including the Better Buildings Challenge, EarthCraft Light Commercial and utility rebates. Dennis will also offer a brief overview of current Southface activities including the Greenprints 2012 Conference to be held in early March at the Georgia Tech Research Institute.

AIA ATL Green Design Showcase: Call For Entries

The Committee on the Environment (COTE) works to advance, disseminate, and advocate—to the profession, the building industry, the academy, and the public—design practices that integrate built and natural systems and enhance both the design quality and environmental performance of the built environment. COTE serves as the community and voice on behalf of AIA architects regarding sustainable design and building science and performance.

PUBLISHED: Winning and finalist projects will also be featured in Southface news letter.

Categories to address when submitting nominations:
• SITE - preserving water and eco-system quality
• ENERGY - conserving and creating
• WASTE - limiting during construction and/or occupation
• MATERIALS - reducing, re-using and /or recycling
• INDOOR ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY - protecting and/or enhancing
• LIVABLE COMMUNITIES - enhancing connections within communities
• INTEGRATION - integrating green design in the design process.

Proposals: Due by 5pm, February 17th, 2012 Submit to tbutler@southface.org the following:
• Entry Form - Complete the form for your project, one project per form please (see contact info below if any questions).
• PDF of Proposed Presentation Board – Submit one 24x36 .pdf file of the project presention board. Board should be in Landscape format. We suggest that the text focus on modeled or actual metrics and not merely copy the scorecard of any rating system the project persued. Images should highlight sustainable strategies.
• Copy of online Reciept for Fee - Entrance fee of $25 is required and may be paid online. Please submit some proof of student status (note from professor, etc…) We highly encourage students to enter for an opportunity to get your work displayed publicly.
Review and Selection Process - The AIA Atlanta COTE Committee will review all proposals received and select finalists based on the criteria above, as well as on clear graphic presentation. Projects not previously submitted to the AIA Atlanta COTE Design Showcase will be given preference.

Announcement - Finalists will be announced by February 24th, 2012.

If selected, FURTHER MATERIALS will be due by 12 noon, March 6th, 2012 delivered to the Southface Energy Institute, attn: Tom Butler 241 Pine St. NE Atlanta, GA 30308

1. 24” x 36” Printed copy of .pdf file submitted to jury.
2. Securely dry mount artwork on rigid backing. Boards will be diplayed on easels.
3. Square corners (no grommets)
